Gel, powder gel or Shellac: the difference

All three cure under a lamp and end up glossy. The difference is whether your own nail is only painted or built up anew.

Short natural nails with rosé Shellac

Shellac: colour on your own nail

Shellac is actually a brand name. In everyday use the word stands for UV polish, also called gel polish: base, colour and top coat are applied thinly and each layer is cured under the lamp. The nail keeps its own length and shape.

Shellac lasts much longer than normal nail polish and does not chip as quickly. It suits you if your own nails are strong and you mainly want colour.

UV gel: extensions for length and shape

With a gel extension, the nail is rebuilt in several layers. If it is to be longer, an extension is added and the gel is modelled onto it. Length and shape can be chosen freely, from short and round to long and pointed.

The gel makes the nail strong. Because your own nail keeps growing underneath, the extension needs an infill after a few weeks.

Powder gel: shaped like a putty

Powder gel combines gel with powder. The mixture is easy to shape before curing and is then cured under the lamp. As with gel, the result is an extension that lengthens or strengthens the nail, and it also needs infills.

Whether gel or powder gel suits your nails better is something we discuss before the treatment. Both cost the same with us.

Which one suits whom?

  • Shellac if your own length is enough and you want the colour to last longer than nail polish.
  • Gel or powder gel if your nails should be longer, more even or stronger, or if they tear easily.
  • All three work as a base for designs such as French tips, ombré or chrome.

Removal: better in the studio

Shellac is softened and taken off, an extension is filed down. Pulling it off or roughly filing it at home damages the natural nail. Removal in the studio costs €20.
